Home Security Monitoring--How Much Does It Cost?
Monitored home security systems are popular since an alarm alone might not be enough to scare away a burglar in time. With monitored systems, when the alarm goes off, it will alert your security company and they'll (depending on what you sign up for) send a car or alert the police. According to Beefing up Your Home's Security, an article up at Bankrate.com, the monthly cost for the services of a security monitoring company run $20-$30/mo. You have to consider the cost of the installation as well, but many companies offer low cost installation as long as you agree to term of X years or months with them. Bankrate also has an article on Home Security System Basics.
While the top name alarm monitoring companies in the business may charge $20-$30 or more per month, they generally also force you into using their proprietary equipment and alarm panels.
Considering many home builders these days are installing alarm equipment, you should consider a generic alarm monitoring alternative - one that will work with almost any alarm panel out there.
Think about it - why pay big bucks for a name, when you can get the same service from a company that doesn't have to pay a lot of money for brand recognition. Afterall, isn't it about making your home safe and secure?

I agree.
The only time you should pay $29.99 for monitoring is if you can't afford to invest in the equipment and installation up front. Then you will be locked into a 36 month agreement to offset these costs.
But realize these are propriety systems that many times no one else will be able to monitor.
If you have a system already that is fully functional, then locate a local security system monitoring company. In fact you may be able to get monitoring less then $20 if you look hard enough.

Our insurance costs went down when we installed our security system. It was one more reason to feel good about having home security.
