Looking for herbal or natural rememdies for acid reflux? Well, you might have an easy one right in the door of your refrigerator. Mustard is a "little known and perhaps surprising remedy for heratburn. The next time you have an attack of acid reflux, try eating a half teaspoon of any yellow or gray commercial mustard." Granted mustard isn't that tasty without the hot dog or sandwich to go with it, but, hey, if it works, it works. I haven't personally tried this one, so if anyone does, let us know how it works.
Quote from the Natural Stomach Care book.
I looked on this website because mustard is one of the major things that give me heartburn. So I assume I dont have acid reflux, then what do you think I might have?

Do you get heartburn immediately after having mustard and other problemm foods, or is it a delayed reaction? Do all spicy foods give you this trouble (that's the case for many people, and it's pretty normal).
Acid reflux is when acid escapes into the esophagus from the stomach, and it's usually a chronic problem, not something where you can point at a specific food as the culprit.
I think with these home remedies (i.e. the mustard suggestion) it requires a bit of trial and error to see what works for you. Other people recommend apple cider vinegar or DCL tablets.

MUSTARD, WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it, I feel so much better :). This is my first time trying it. I hope this will work again if the pain happens again. Thank you for posting this info, I'll try anything if it means relief!

Hmm... Mustard never worked for me. It actually made heartburn worse. I guess we're all different :)

I actually have the same problem as Linda. Even a teaspoon of mustard, and I have a terrible stabbing pain in my chest within 15 minutes. Doc says this is acid reflux (other conditions excluded after exam).
Go figure.

a spoon of bread soda in milk is excellent for heartburn tried and tested.

I've suffered from Heartburn with all my pregnancies (3 Total) and the Mustard WORKS, we only buy the Spicy Brown, it burns alittle going down at first but the heartburn is gone within ten minutes. It is soo much safer for the Baby than OTC or Prescription Medicines.

I have acid reflux so bad that I wake up choking during the night. Mustard has been a life saver for me. Laugh if you want but it works!!!!

The first time I tried mustard it made my heartburn worse - or so it seemed. After a friend swore it helped her when she was pregnant, I tried it the way she described. A heaping tablespoon followed by a glass of water. She said it burnt at first and it does, but then blessed relief. I have reflux and I hope this works as not only pain relief but to neutralize the esophogeal acid.

It worked!!! I was in some agony a bit ago, but now I am fine :)
Give it a try!

Oh yeah, it DEFINITELY WORKS! My boyfriend told me to try it about a year ago, and it worked IMMEDIATELY!!! Faster than tums or any other over the counter medication!! I thought it was something that only he thought of, but I researched it and people really eat mustard to cure heartburn! I usually drink water quickly afterwards because of course its not that great without a hotdog or hamburger, lol... BUT YEAH,,,TOTALLY WORKS!!! TRY IT AND SEE...ALSO, MILK WORKS GREAT!!

I tried mustard for the first time a couple of days ago and it seemed to work well, but I'm going to try again. Sometimes a slice or two of bread seems to work - maybe it soaks up the acid more.

Also, be careful with milk. My gastroenterologist says that though it may cause soothing relief in the short run, in the long run one effect of milk is to increase acid production, so you can get caught in a vicious cycle.

Well I didnt believe it but I tried it and it works. I have heartburn all the time. Extremely surprised this worked.

i have chronic heartburn, and i'll admit, it might have helped for like an hour, if that, and then it came right back. I would compare the effectiveness to rolaids though. I was quite surprised it even worked at all though

I landed on this page because I was looking to see if mustard triggers my acid reflux, because it sure does mine - but then again, I have to avoid bananas too. I was surprised to see that it is used to lessen the effects of heartburn and/or acid reflux. I currently take Protanix but I'm terrible at remembering to take the pill every single day. My body lets me know by the fourth skipped day :-(

mustard always works wonders for me, so much so that I gather the discarded mustard packs at work at keep them in my desk. I no longer even buy tums to deal with heartburn, a couple packs of mustard and the heartburn is gone!

Mustard works! I tried everything from, Rolaids, Malox, Pepto-Bismol, and Tums. I ate about 3 table spoons of mustard and my heartburns were gone in seconds.

Im not sure that this does work, although I have been told by a couple of people it works for them Ive had even more tell me it doesn't. I will be trying it followed by a glass of water as described here though see if the glass of water makes a difference.

I was diagnosed with esophageal acid reflux - last night after drinking a little orange juice I had a case of reflux and I tried the mustard - it worked....
I tried it today again and it really worked! .... Wow!!!

Mustard works! I take a tablespoon! Someone told me years ago to take a tablespoon, I thought they were nuts! But...it gets rid of it, almost instantly!

I have experienced heartburn for 2 days now, i am on a prescribed dosage of acid reflux medication too. I took a double dosage today and nothing worked, tried drinking milk, feels good going down, but had no relief, also ate a cup of yogurt that didnt help either, and a few saltine crackers still no relief. I just tried for the first time 2 teaspoons of mustard, burning as it goes down. I cant believe it for 2 days i have suffered and now after reading online about mustard, I am convinced it works after I just tried it. It has been 10 minutes and I feel better

milk is only really a temporary relief for reflux in the end milk actually makes it worse because it does the opposite of neutralizing the acids. a spoonful of mustard followed by a glass of water will do the trick or a spoonful of baking soda dissolved in lukewarm water will work as well with this you'll find you burp and then the reflux is gone it reacts in ur stomach similar to that of baking soda and vinegar neutralizing two extremes. hope this helped! :)

i love mustard personally. so when i was told once to eat mustard to help my heartburn, i was surprised when it worked. do you think i eat tums anymore? no. just mustard when it comes to heartburn.
Posted by: Iana Mullen | September 17, 2009 at 08:42 PM
Looked online because I forgot to buy my antacids today. I eat at least a big container of tums a week and prilosec, etc.
THE MUSTARD WORKED!! And now that I have read about all these natural remedies I will never take those drugs again. Thanks!

Just tried this and cant believe it but this worked. Instantly too.
Some wives tales are true! I ate 1 full teaspoon then plain cracker to kill the taste. 2 minutes later, gone!

Mustard is my favorite condiment so I don't mind taking it by itself. I get heartburn very infrequently, but when I do, mustard relieves it my symptoms more thoroughly and for longer than tums or Zantac ever did. There is a bit of an acidic feeling surge just after taking about a tablespoon, but after a few seconds the problem fades completely. Maybe it's just my body's chemical makeup or something, but I'm a believer.

MUSTARD WORKED!! AFTER TAKING TUMS FOR 3 DAYS AND NO RELIEF, I TURNED TO MUSTARD. WITHIN 2 MINUTES MY PAIN WAS GONE. THANKS!

Just tried the mustard here at 4:45am with a bad case of heartburn. I knew I was going to have to get dressed and go to the store for tums or rolaids. Nope, I tried the teaspoon of mustard with water and I feel much better already. Thank goodness I found this site. Now I can go back to bed and sleep peacefully. This is a keeper as a heartburn remedy for me. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

A mother of four suggested mustard and it works like a charm!

I tried mustard & it also made it worse. But like other poster mentioned, we're all different. It worked for my boy friend, though.
Posted by: Zee | February 25, 2010 at 06:37 PM
It works!! Everyone, including my husband, looks at me like I have 10 heads or something when I tell them to try this or I'm pulling into a drive thru for mustard packets!! Its hilarious. I found out about this years ago. Like the other posters, it may not work for everyone and it can burn going down for a few seconds, but for me the heartburn is gone within 5-10 mins. I just swallow a teaspoon or full packet of mustard without water.

I just had thyroid surgery and woke up at 2am with a bad case of heartburns from my first real meal. I took some Tums but that did not help. So I remembered reading about mustard and since I was so desperate, I took some and it WORKED!!
Posted by: Pam | April 19, 2010 at 11:47 PM
Hey a coworker suggested this, and I had to check it out first, and wow it worked well of course after I threw up passed out with pain, but after I woke up I felt better..

I forgot to buy my Prilosec so I was looking for remedies I might have here at 4:00 AM. I just tried the mustard and it worked great. Not sure if it will stay away but it sure did help with the immediate problem. I took two teaspoons full.

I took one tablespoon of yellow colmans mustard and it has eased it.
