There is an odor in our fireplace. It is not a smoke smell. More like a metallic smell. We have had three different fireplaces installed and all three have given off an odor. Any ideas on what it could be? We have even ripped everything out down to the 2x4's and still have the same odor problem once we install the actual unit.

It could be the chimney liner or cap that is heating up and creating the smell. If it is occurring when you do not have a fire try puting in a chimney balloon to see if that stops the smell. If it does than you know the problem is not in the hearth area, but rather the issue is further up the chimney.
